Saaru


Ingredients





100 gm Red gram ( Thur dal )





30 gm Tamarind





Salt - to taste





2 nos Tomatoes





Curry leaves - few





3 nos Garlic





1/4 tsp Mustard seeds





Asafoetida - Pinch





2 tbsp Coriander leaves ( chopped )





Saaru Powder





10 nos Peppercorns





1/2 tsp cumin





1 tsp Coriander seeds





1 no Red chilli





curry leaves





1/4 tsp Turmeric powder





Method





  1. Soak tamarind in water for 10 mins and take out the extract
  2. Boil the dal till mashed condition
  3. Add salt 2 cups of water and stir well
  4. Add 1 tsp of saaru powder
  5. Add chopped tomato and allow it to boil on low fire for atleast 10 mins
  6. Add tamarind extract and boil again for 5 mins, add curry leaves
  7. Temper with chopped garlic, mustard seeds and pinch of Asafoetida
  8. Serve Garnished with chopped coriander leaves
